Over the past 22 years, enrollment has been to National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) grew by 52.3% in a period of budget ups and downs.

This year, the budget is 52,728 million pesos, of which 61.5% goes to teaching; 26.4% for research, 7.5% for university extension and 4.6% for institutional management.
Between 2001 and 2016, the growth rate of the total budget of UNAM was 70.3%, while the enrollment growth rate was 41.3%.
Along those lines, and despite 90% of the university’s spending component being federal grants, there was a 4.7% decline in the university’s budget in real terms from 2016 to 2023, even as the enrollment growth rate increased by 7.8 percent.
The new rector, Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas, has highlighted in recent weeks the fact that important sources of funding have been canceled, such as trusts like the one managed by Conacyt and other types of agreements that have been made with the federal government.
From 2016 to 2023, the federal subsidy decreased by 3.8 percent. During this period, the growth rate of own income decreased by 28 percent.

Currently, 95% of HQ courses are accredited or in the process of being accredited, and 86% of postgraduate courses are in National Postgraduate Quality System.
In the 2021-2022 cycle, it registered 30,735 high school graduates and 34,221 bachelor’s degrees; 30,830 holders of bachelor’s degrees (in 2022), 82.5% through options other than traditional diploma or dissertation and professional examinations, and registered 9,183 specialists, masters and doctoral graduates (in 2022).
