Abelina López, the municipal president of Acapulco, announced that her private secretary, Ángel Vargas Rodríguez, had been removed from his post for participating in robberies following the passage of Hurricane Otis.
In a press conference last weekend, the official announced that since last November 14, Ángel Vargas has been permanently removed from his post, explaining that his administration must be an example of honesty.
I cannot allow any of my officials to participate in this decay. “I have decided, as my honesty characterizes me, to remove him from his position as of November 14,” he explained.
Images have been circulated through social media in which Ángel Vargas Rodríguez is seen taking part in the looting of a store branch.
Separated from his position, the official is seen in shared videos carrying a toy car and a black bag, the contents of which are unknown.
Archdiocese, concerned
Leopoldo González González, the archbishop of Acapulco, warned yesterday of the alarming situation of daily theft in Acapulco through extortion, extortion and levies in the region as residents try to rebuild their lives after the devastating passage of the hurricane.
The archbishop said some people have expressed their concerns to him that after receiving funds to clean their homes or rebuild their homes, they could become victims of these criminal practices.
Some people have expressed their fear to me that now that they have the means to clean their home or rebuild it, they may become victims of this plague (extortion, collection of rent or fees),” the archbishop said.
On the other hand, González González shared the message of solidarity and support issued by Pope Francis.
“Dear friends, I know what you suffer in Acapulco; I know the devastation of this hurricane, what happened to you, I’m just close to you, I’m close to you and I ask with you that you can rise up, remake yourself, show the vibration that you have and replace. I am praying for you, may God bless you,” the archbishop read in a video shared on social media.
Starting next Wednesday, November 29, support for clean-up efforts is expected to begin, consisting of the delivery of 8,000 pesos in cash.
The payment will be delivered by the so-called servants of the nation.
