A giant kite flying through the sky: this is Shenzhen’s new (and majestic) drone show

Residents and visitors to Shenzhen this week witnessed how a colossal dragon dressed in colored lights danced on their heads. This spectacular scene was made possible by the coordinated movement of thousands of drones moving in formation to kick off the Duanwu Festival in the aforementioned Chinese city.

As we can see in shared videos according to the @TripInChina Twitter account, the figure towered over Long Hua Gong Yuan Park in a nighttime landscape dotted with skyscrapers and various architectural structures. Visible from almost every angle, the dragon appeared in yellow, blue and reddish tones as it soared across the sky.

Flying kites in the sky

This week’s drone exhibition, according to Chinese site sina.com, was named “Flying kites in the sky“. And it was a prominent feature on the first day of this festival with strong cultural ties, which is also celebrated by holding dragon boat races and eating zongzi (a typical rice dish).

Now, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen a drone show in China. The Asian giant, home to DJI Technology, the world’s largest drone manufacturer, has been perfecting this technological alternative to fireworks for years, which is gaining more and more fans. Performances are generally more and more sophisticated and surprising.

For example, in 2021, just over 3,200 perfectly synchronized drones put on an extraordinary show in Shanghai. During the performance, they formed differently three-dimensional shapes in all cases as expected of large size. From DNA to the ancestor of cars of the Asian brand Genesis (it was the Genesis show).

Now we have seen not only the large movement capacity of drones, but also the perfect combination of colors in the development of the show in complex figures such as dragons. Technological advancements coupled with technical experience seem to guarantee that drone shows will improve over time.
